It’s not a problem of writing system, but a national issue

I have received this and I gladly publish it:

The virulence with which the representatives of the Slovenian nation in Resia are exploiting the use of a “z” in the heading of the local parish bulletin and the prominence with which their press diffuses their suffered indignation, fully confirm that the problem does not concern the sphere of the writing system. Actually, the last stage of the path, scientifically programmed, dearly paid and subtly put into effect, for the absorption of the Resian community into the Slovenian nation, has already begun.

Step by step, with infinite patience, the “narod” proceeds with the certainty that Resians - some for fatigue, some for quiet living, some for unconsciousness, some for interest - abandoned by democratic political forces and with the complicity of an absent-minded State unable to understand the prize raffled off - will give up to fight for their dignity of being a people culturally and linguistically different from the majority of the nation - the Italian nation - which Resians feel they belong to and which they have consciously decided to join, during times beyond suspicion.

The challenge is actually uneven. On one side, citizens who do not have others purposes other than handing on a clean conscience of their historical identity, not polluted from rivers of money that arrive from beyond border and that combine to construct scientific confirmations of bigoted positions. On the other side, employees of Slovenian organizations, financed by Ljubljana, that, from Natisone valleys to Valcanale passing through Torre valleys and Resia, dedicate all the their time and the huge means in their hand in order to build the evidence of a national belonging that had never existed and that has been hardly proclaimed even by them.

The strategy is simple. The local language, the oral idiom spoken by native populations, has already fallen into disuse; now, in this last and far periphery, for too long detached from the motherland, the campaign of literacy of standard Slovenian can start, as well as its definitive inclusion in the cultural, social, economical and political context. In other words, local Slovenian nationalists, by means of the power of their finances, the guile of their political alliances and the complicity of Friuli and Italy’s disinterest, are about to complete what Tito’s followers hasn’t been able to do with the high-handedness of weapons.

Actually, it is not the problem of Resia or of the communities of Slavic culture and language in the province of Udine to be up to discussion. This is a national and European issue. It is not about grammar or writing system but freedom, democracy and national self-determination.

Soon, many people shall answer for their own choices, for their superficiality or complicity: from Udine to Trieste and from Rome to Strasbourg, but mainly facing their own conscience.

In a small way, I don’t have the intention of exhausting myself in diatribes about writing system and grammar. In order to live I must work. I don’t have legions of linguistics teachers at my disposal, neither mass media to support my positions. I know that this is a political issue and the match must be played on this field. It comforts myself and it encourages me to know that I am not alone, even if, knowing the opponents, I know that they will not hesitate to launch their attacks also on personal terms, as they have already begun to do.
